History of Intelligence Quotient

When IQ measures started

The French psychologist Alfred Binet was asked to conduct the first comparison of intelligence. Binet’s task was to separate less capable children who would fall behind their peers and thus hinder instruction. He created the IQ test in 1905 and, together with his collaborator, Theodore Simon, composed the Binet-Simon intelligence scale. Later, in 1908 and 1911, Binet published revised versions of the scale.
A later amendment of the Binet-Simon intelligence scale was published in 1916 by Lewis M. Terman of Stanford University. Terman incorporated the suggestion that the individual intelligence level would be measured as the intelligence quotient, or IQ.

More about IQ

IQ or Intelligence Quotient is an attempt to measure intelligence. This means many things to many people but generally the attribute of intelligence refers to quickness of mental comprehension (or mental agility). Intelligence is often confused with knowledge, wisdom, memory, or other attributes and in general has a variety of meanings depending on the context in which it is used. The term IQ usually refers to the attempt to measure a person's mental agility.
To calculate an intelligence quotient, a person's mental age is divided by his chronological age, then multiplied by 100.

An IQ tells you what your score is on a particular intelligence test, compared to your age-group. The test has a mean score of 100 points and a standard deviation of 15 points. What does this standard deviation mean? It means that 68 percent of the population score an IQ within the interval 85 - 115. And that 95 percent of the population scores within the interval 70 - 130 of IQ.
